“With my whole heart I cry; answer me, O LORD!I will keep your statutes. I call to you; save me, that I may observe your testimonies. I rise before dawn and cry for help; I hope in your words. My eyes are awake before the watches of the night, that I may meditate on your promise. Hear my voice according to your steadfast love; O LORD, according to your justice give me life. They draw near who persecute me with evil purpose; they are far from your law. But you are near, O LORD, and all your commandments are true. Long have I known from your testimonies that you have founded them forever. ” Psalm 119:145-152
I was amazed by so many things on our recent trip to the UK. But one of the things I was amazed about was the “age” of things made by man still there. You know we talk about things that happened in the 2nd Century…I actually touched what was left of a Roman barracks wall from 142 AD. We talk about the Church councils of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th centuries…I actually touched and walked in churches that have foundations that old and are still working churches. Amazing things that connected me with history in ways I could not have been connected without going there. Amazed, truly amazed to know I was walking in castles and churches that parts of them were built 1000 years ago. And this was “stuff” man built…so as I come to the text this morning I see some of the motivation for David’s words much clearer.
Look at David in the above text…He is truly amazed at what he KNOWS of his God and God’s Word…the truths of which have been around since the dawn of time, not merely a few thousand years. He says, “With my whole heart I cry; answer me, O LORD!… I call to you; save me… I rise before dawn and cry for help… My eyes are awake before the watches of the night… Hear my voice according to your steadfast love…” He may have struggles but listen closely…He calls on the One he KNOWS will answer…the One who will save…the One who listens to His cries…because He KNOWS God’s steadfast love all the way down to his toes. WE marvel at the temporary (even something 1000 years old) but David is marveling at His God who has been the same since before the beginning…One with whom he has a personal relationship.
In this prayer David repeats the time honored promises of God back to him that enable him to do as he says here, “I will keep your statutes…that I may observe your testimonies… I hope in your words… that I may meditate on your promise… according to your justice give me life…Long have I known from your testimonies that you have founded them forever.” FOREVER! I got excited by Roman ruins 1800 years old and churches between 800 and 1000 years old, but none of that is FOREVER!
David knows God is with Him. David knows God’s Word is true because it has proven itself true throughout the ages …and it comes from the One who defines Truth. The knowledge of this should be contagious, and we should be amazed, stunned, astonished, shocked, and staggered (or whatever other word that the English would use. LOL!) For God’s ways are to leave us dumbfounded on one hand and energized on the other. For FOREVER He has been the same and FOREVER He will be the same. Long after these monuments to man’s ingenuity are gone…God is and always will be! Now that is truly phenomenal!
God shows us through David that the only way to be effective for God and those around you is to be so secure in your relationship with God that His truth gives you the boldness to stand firm in your faith…to be immoveable in your resolve, so that you might be abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.
Though I was moved and amazed to be walking where our fore-fathers of the faith have walked this is nothing in comparison to KNOWING that the eternal God is with us every day. Walking in His light should keep us AMAZED, which will motivate us to walk His way in a manner that He established ages ago…that has always been God’s plan for you all along! Simply AMAZING!
God bless you today.
In His Grip,
Pastor Mike
