“All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes, but the LORD weighs the spirit. Commit your work to the LORD, and your plans/thoughts will be established.”– Prov. 16:2-3
It was so good to be in worship yesterday.
This time of year with so much pollen flying around I never know what kind of day I will have (as many of you know who have suffered with me through the years.) But then people started arriving and I was calmed by the love of God’s people and by being in God’s house of worship. Sometimes it simply means NOT giving into our nature and receiving the blessings of God without hesitation.
Proverbs 16:2 reads, “All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes, but the LORD weighs the spirit.” This text reveals there is a problem in man…even redeemed man…because it speaks of us making excuses for our ways and always thinking that we are right and our ways are pure…when they are not. Every thought, word and deed is tainted with sinfulness/fallenness and must be repented of. The greatest part of our affliction and trouble in these days is from working our own thoughts the way we want….and having God judge that behavior along the way.
However, in order to overcome such affliction, trouble, and confusion in life we must resign ourselves to what God says next, “Commit your work to the LORD, and your plans/thoughts will be established.” Fulfilling the acts of faith in which God’s Word directs us, is the only way to experience the peace and hope that God not only has promised is ours but has established is ours through His covenant. And it is worship WITH God and His God’s people that is to be the main thing in our lives. You see going to worship is an Act of Faith…it is the will of God for God’s people…and we must carry out this act of faith unless God has otherwise providentially hindered us.
Being in worship…committing my ways to the LORD always brings me a calmness and a settlement of thoughts immediately just like it says in Psalm 94:19- “When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul.” Our concerns may be small in the grand scheme of things but it committing our way and work to God and following God’s established will does enable us to experience His many blessings.
1. Being in God’s house…is an act of faith that automatically assures us that we are where God wants me to be. This is the way God has made us…otherwise He would not have commanded us to not forsake meeting together (Hebrews 10:25).
2. Singing and praying with God’s people fulfills the mandates of Scripture for God’s people to worship together…not separate…unless providentially hindered. It is also a means of grace provided by God for His people.
3. Receiving the Word and sacraments corporately strengthens our soul as once again we know this was where we need to be… with God’s people, in God’s house, receiving God’s Word …together as God intended and has commanded His church. This too is a means of grace.
When we do as God commands, “Commit your work to the LORD, and your plans/thoughts will be established” it is amazing, the blessings that come with a clarity of purpose and a renewed desire to do the LORD’s will. But then I am convinced of these truths…every LORD’s Day! For…“Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near.”– Rev. 1:3
God Bless y’all today. Don’t forget to continue to pray and then let’s plan to come together on Sunday for worship as God’s people desire to do…if it be God’s will!
In His Grip,
Pastor mike
