“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.” Heb. 10:23
This morning, as I sit in my office, drinking coffee, I find myself pondering, confessing, and resting in the hope that Christ has won for me on the cross. I recognize that this should be a daily discipline and one of my greatest delights. Because His is the living hope (not a theoretical one); the anchor of hope (giving stability in the storms); and the glorious hope (secured by His cross work on my behalf). “Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.” Rom. 12:12.
Indeed, we don’t “hope against all hope,” or “hope in hope.” Rather, our hope is in Jesus Christ the Son of God who is a living Person, not a theological proposition, and at the same time very God. We’re not keeping our fingers crossed, but locking our gaze on Him—the author and perfecter of our faith.
Jesus is the emphatic “Yes!” to every promise God has ever made- “For all the promises of God find their Yes in Him. That is why it is through Him that we utter our Amen to God for His glory.” –2 Cor. 1:20). He is also our perfect righteousness, faithful Advocate, and returning Bridegroom. He is “the ruler of the kings of the earth,” constantly at work in all things for our good. He has defeated the devil and is about making all things new.
Remember today, because of who He is, and what He has done, is doing, and will do for us, not hoping… is not an option. It might be our default mode, but refusing hope is like refusing oxygen, water, and food.
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” Rom. 15:13
