“Righteous are you, O LORD, and right are your rules. You have appointed your testimonies in righteousness and in all faithfulness. My zeal consumes me, because my foes forget your words. Your promise is well tried, and your servant loves it. I am small and despised, yet I do not forget your precepts. Your righteousness is righteous forever, and your law is true. Trouble and anguish have found me out, but your commandments are my delight. Your testimonies are righteous forever; give me understanding that I may live.”- Psalm 119:137-144
Good Morning! This is the encouraging phrase that we heard with regularity from hotel staff, shop owners, and just regular people in the UK. Good morning! Two words we take for granted and don’t often say any more but they are two true words that can set our attitude looking heavenward as we are hearing them and experiencing a truly good morning no matter what is going on for God, by His grace, has granted us a new day to bring Him glory.
With this in mind we ought to be of a mind to pray as David does here, “Righteous are you, O LORD, and right are your rules. You have appointed your testimonies in righteousness and in all faithfulness.” Is this something we believe in our head AND in our heart at the same time? Do we recognize that He IS righteous…naturally, immutably, and universally, in all His ways and works which are His thoughts purposes and decrees? He defines righteousness and faithfulness! Everything God does and says reveals these attributes…everything… for that is the only way He can act toward His people because of His covenant. Since God has appointed His testimonies in righteousness we, His people, are to keep His Word for it is right, true and faithful in its entirety.
We are called to not only keep it but to be “zealous” for it to be kept and not abused. “My zeal consumes me, because my foes forget your words.” His zeal for His’ LORD’s honor consumes him for he knows the absolute truth and when he sees others abusing it his desire is to correct that abuse at any and all cost. He takes the insults and misuse of God’s word personally because His Father has been maligned. God does not need our defense but we NEED to be zealous for His Word. Too long the Church has been silent or full of compromise on such things…but we are to be zealous for His honor with a righteous indignation when His honor is abused.
God’s Word will not be found wanting, “Your promise is well tried, and your servant loves it.” The Bible tells us time and time again that God is righteous and that He is faithful…these define His nature so they also define what He does which He has proven throughout history and has had it written down so that we can see His promises fulfilled on the way to keeping His ultimate promise of His return and redemption completed. Non-believers hate His Word but the Christian always loves God’s Word because they are the very words of life.
But David also reminds us that we must be humble before God and His Word. Listen to the words of the King David, “I am small and despised, yet I do not forget your precepts.” The king said that. The most powerful king at the time said that. Standing before the LORD of glory he knows His place! The fools around him tell him that he is small and worthless but rather than listening to such gibberish and foolishness he takes comfort in God’s Word. Our problem is that we listen too much to the words of those who are fools. They seek to tell us how useless our faith is. They seek to keep us fearful in this fallen world so that we do not trust the LORD. They tell us that caution is the best measure which keeps us from being bold and doing as God commands and then they point out our hypocrisy in what we say and what we do. But it is God’s Word that we should listen to as King David. It is here that we will find comfort…and oftentimes… here alone.
Then he proclaims, “Your righteousness is righteous forever, and your law is true (forever).” He is repeating for us what he said in vs. 137 just to make the point! So is this what we believe? Really? Maybe it is but then why don’t the lives of many Christians exhibit this belief and assurance? David makes clear; God is completely righteous and His Word is true forever! This ought to cause up to stand up and stand firm for the LORD especially in these last days.
Now David admits to God, “Trouble and anguish have found me out, but your commandments are my delight.” Trouble and anguish are either always with us or they are crouching around the next corner. God’s Word constantly tells us that this is true not to scare us but to prepare us! David takes delight in God’s Word not just because they are inspirational but because they are our very LIFE! II Tim. 3:16-17- “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”
Every Christian “knows” this last truth of this section of the Psalm personally, “Your testimonies are righteous forever; give me understanding that I may live.” Since God IS righteous… all His Word, His precepts , His rules, His laws, His ways and His testimonies are always righteous as well. Even knowing this truth, David still gives us an example to follow, he says,“…give me understanding” ..in other words, anyone can memorize God’s Word but we need to constantly be seeking Him to give us understanding of His Word through the Spirit so that we can discern His ways and decrees with true godly wisdom…righteous wisdom… over and above the foolishness of the world.
So Good Morning, for this is the day the Lord has made…which means today you can LISTEN to the Word of God as you read it or hear it read to you…speak it out loud if you can…because we need to believe…really believe that God is righteous and faithful and that His Word is absolutely true in every sense so that we can actually love Him with all our hearts, mind, soul and strength and our neighbor as ourselves.
God Bless y’all today.
